The Newbold Verdon Parish Archive Goes On Tour!
..to Desford Free Church to talk about Newbold Verdon Hall to Desford History Society.
On 19th May, one of our members, Roger King, spoke to the Desford History Society about the history of Newbold Verdon Hall – now known as Hall Farm.
Roger focused on the period from 1623 to 1767, when the Hall and the manor of Newbold Verdon were owned by members of the Crewe family, and when, around 1700, the house we see today was built by Lord Nathaniel Crewe, Bishop of Durham.
He explained that the Hall has the very rare Grade I listed building status, shared with the likes of Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament. Roger noted that it is not entirely clear why this status was conferred on the Hall, but that it had been owned during this period by several notable national figures, and it was these people that the talk focused upon.

Sound Advice from Long Ago
Neil Brearley’s Memories of visiting 39 Dragon Lane as a young boy: 'It is becoming a regular theme to hear words like ‘preparedness’ and ‘self-sufficiency’ when the possibility of food and energy shortages are discussed in the news. My first lessons on this topic were given by a Newbold Verdon resident who had had lived through two world wars and the general strike. So, it could be said he was well qualified on how to cope in difficult times.'
News from the Archive Group: Annual review
On 16 April, the Newbold Verdon Parish Archive held its Annual General Meeting, where the Chair reflected on the past year’s achievements and outlined plans for the months ahead. Members endorsed refreshed versions of the Constitution and Key Objectives, which will take effect from April 2026. These objectives reaffirm the Archive’s commitment to collecting and preserving local history, maintaining a public website and digital catalogue, encouraging research, strengthening links with community groups, and continuing to identify funding needs and opportunities.
Under 11’s football trip to Holland March 1989
From the Archive this month, we are looking back to some memories and recollections of Gail Horsley, regarding the under 11’s football team and their eventful trip to Holland.
“Back in 1989 my son was part of the Under 11’s football team in Newbold Verdon, ran by Tony and Rhoda Crowfoot, with the help of some of the ‘Dads’. The team was invited to a tournament in Holland to play against some junior teams there and there was a lot of excitement that we going ‘abroad’ to play football.
Some organising had to take place. Making sure everyone’s passports were up to date, where we were going to stay, booking the coach and ferry, and making sure everyone’s football kit was all present and correct..."
