Objectives of the Archive

To facilitate and encourage the collection and archiving of Newbold Verdon and surrounding area heritage by welcoming contributions relevant to Newbold Verdon from anyone who has documents, artefacts, photographs, memories or information to add to the Archive collection.

To catalogue and digitise all such archives as received or loaned to The Archive and to preserve and store all such archives within the archive room of Newbold Verdon Library.

To promote and encourage a wider audience and understanding of The Archive and its archives through the development of a blog within the existing library website.

To research the History of Newbold Verdon and its environs and to encourage Archive members and the local community to carry out their own research into their historic past.

To involve the local community in activities in order to learn more about their local Heritage through events, talks and any other publicity laid on by The Archive.

To encourage active participation within The Archive in order to continue the longevity of the Newbold Verdon Archives for future generations.

About the Group

The Archive is run by a group of volunteers,  It started in Mid 2022 following the gift of many documents detailing village life from the present day back to the 1700's. This is an ongoing project as more documents and oral recollections are received and catalogued.

As a not-for-profit organisation, we rely on funding and voluntary donations to keep our history and heritage alive.

In July 2025 the Group received funding from Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council/The Voluntary & Community Sector to purchase an A3 printer for use by the Group but also for the community at large. It is accessible to local people in the village Library.

Testimonials

We are a small group of volunteers but we are happy to help with people's research where we can. We were able to help someone with connections to the village who wanted to know more about her family that had lived here and she was very grateful:

"I have spent most of this morning browsing among the reams of information you have gleaned. It has opened up a whole world of my ancestry and answered so many queries. You are a magician, and fantastic explorer of records with such delightful results.

Your amazing research has brought my father’s side of my family tree into reality, it gives me a sort of fuzzy feeling inside. My sons and their offspring are equally excited. My (deceased) brother’s family and grandchildren are also fascinated. So your amazing work has gone into many homes. Comments keep me searching for where they got items from that they’ve found. Many thanks for your generous efforts."

We also helped another family who were looking for information to help their research into the local area and they appreciated our help:

"Our interaction with the Newbold Verdon Parish Archive has been a very positive experience with information freely given and a desire to help expressed at all times. Everyone involved has been willing to source an answer to our query and then go beyond that to supply other information that has really enabled us to learn more about our ancestors and their lives. Thank you."

After receiving a request for help from an ex-villager who is now living in New Zealand, members of the Group spent a long period of time researching on her behalf - which was much appreciated:

"I stumbled across the Newbold Verdon Parish Archive Group after searching online for information regarding my early family history from this area. Being overseas made my quest somewhat difficult. It was a long shot but after hitting so many brick walls I was willing to try anything. What eventuated was just amazing.

I got such a lovely response from this great group of helpful volunteers. The time and effort put in on my behalf is very humbling. It has opened up a door in that seemingly ‘impenetrable’ brick wall. So much information received and all done willingly with such detail.

Newbold Verdon was the home of many of my ancestors. They lived, worked, and died in the village and surrounding areas, so receiving such wonderful help is more than I could have ever hoped for. Thank you to all of this group who strive to keep the local history alive through this great archive."

A local lady contacted us about a photo she'd seen in an article we had published in The Graphic. We did some research on her behalf and directed her to other places she might find the information she wanted. She was grateful for our assistance:

"Thankyou so much for this information. It certainly explains the similarity in looks. Much appreciated - you have satisfied my curiosity.  Thank you also for the info on finding a family tree."

We were contacted by someone who was originally from the village and had read one of the Group's articles published monthly in The Graphic:

"I wanted to say a huge thank you for the Archive story about my Great Uncle Ronald Statham MBE. My Great Grandad was George Statham and Grandad was Neville Statham. My Dad is Royston Statham who has lived in Earl Shilton for nearly 60 years now. I have lived in Brighton since 2009, however regularly visit my parents on a monthly basis. A family friend had passed on a hard copy article to my Dad, which he proudly produced just before Christmas.
The article was fascinating and I’ve also seen pictures of my Great Grandad at Desford Colliery in your archives. I will be showing these to my Dad in a couple of weeks time, which he will love to see. He may even know some of the other people in the pictures!
The article was also very timely, as I was planning to start researching the Statham family tree in 2026.
Thank you for this fantastic archive. It’s invaluable in bringing to life our history."

We receive feedback from our social media posts too:

"Great that quiz. Enjoyed having a go and then finding the correct connected words! I got some right and then learnt a few. Thanku."

"I love this … Thank you for helping to keep the history of Newbold Verdon alive!"
